The community of Troy enjoys a long and interesting history as one of Madison County's oldest settlements. It is strategically located along the Historic National Road and also lies along the 1940-1977 alignment of historic U.S. Route 66. It was for many years known as the last major wagon stop east of St. Louis. It is widely recognized as the home of former U.S. Senator Paul Simon, who edited the city's newspaper. The current population is 10,100.
