City of Virden: Proud past, bright future! Located in Macoupin County, Illinois, USA.
Virden made news headlines nationwide following a bloody battle that erupted on October 12, 1898, between locked out coal miners and hired guards of the local coal operator. An attempt to land replacement workers from Alabama sparked a heated gunfight that killed 8 miners, 5 company guards and wounded many.
One of the most scenic segments of Route 66 predates the Mother Road with a two lane highway in 1930 that meanders through a number of communities from Chatham thru Virden and to Staunton.
